My listeners love it. We are anxious to hear more!" Radio 0162 / Netherlands With the upcoming release of Daniela Nardi’s much-anticipated second cd, The Rose Tattoo in October 2008 (Minerva Road), music lovers are eager to hear what this smoldering, passionate performer, with a sensually alluring voice, has in store for them. Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer—Daniela Nardi’s music is literate, yet emotionally charged. It is sonically diverse, personal, but with the breadth and scope of world music. It's groovy but not pop. It’s jazzy but not jazz. Daniela Nardi has attracted comparisons to Joni Mitchell and Sting, but the only word for her unique music is: Earthypopworldjazzcool. Listeners to The Rose Tattoo can expect to hear everything they loved in Daniela’s first cd One True Thing (Minerva Road). But they will also hear a transformed Daniela. The 10 songs on the cd, all by Daniela, were written in a three year period during which her mother, Rose, was battling cancer. “The first record dealt with issues from my youth,” says Nardi. “Now I had the intensity of a life and death situation to deal with, and it shook me to the core. It forced me to go deeper, and find my cutting emotional edge. The album shows how my life has been transformed in the past three years, and the intense feelings I experienced.” Rose, Daniela’s mother, emigrated from Calabria when she was 10 years old. Daniela is her only child. Mother and daughter are very close. The Rose Tattoo was deeply influenced by the time they spent together during the illness. It reflects the deep mark this time left on Daniela’s heart. Daniela Nardi began studying music at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, at the age of five. Dreams of Mozart and Juilliard were dashed by the 1980's British invasion. The Police and other bands influenced Nardi to take up bass guitar and songwriting, in addition to the piano skills she had already acquired. After performing everything from pop to punk to latin to country with a variety of bands, Nardi ended up at York University in Toronto, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in Music. As a working artist, Nardi's career path has traversed many streams: film composer, voice-over artist, film and tv actor, real estate agent, and marketing director. But music has been first and foremost. With her first project, the DNA Trio, Daniela produced a successful independent EP, Spadina Sessions. A featured spot on Bhurr Records' compilation Doggone Wheels, led to One True Thing. With the support of the recording industry's Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Records (FACTOR), Nardi wrote the words, wrote the music, played piano, sang, produced and arranged, and then released the cd on her own label, Minerva Road. A true one-woman show. One True Thing has received critical acclaim and airplay internationally. Its first single, Mr. God charted on the national Adult Contemporary and Jazz Charts. Another tune, Hands, was featured on the U.S. TV series Wild Card. The song You So Beautiful was the third most added track on American Smooth Jazz radio. The cumulative accolades and acclaim garnered Nardi a nomination for Best Group at the 2006 Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. For The Rose Tattoo, Daniela was looking to work with someone to help realize her vision of acoustic nu-jazz blended with electronic music. Along came Juno Award winning producer Greg Kavanagh. “After Greg and I met the first time, I knew we were meant to work together. We both loved Moby and Massive Attack, but still had a soft spot for Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. He echoed my feeling of wanting to take listeners to a different place from the first album, by bridging the old with the new.” Together they have brought about an evolution and transformation in Daniela’s sophisticated sound, while preserving the essence of her earlier sound. The Rose Tattoo is a journey of passion, finesse, intensity, and artistry. It’s Daniela Nardi 2008: as great as before, better than ever, with so much more to come.
